Cooperation: Faller Packaging and Schubert-Pharma package biopharmaceuticals

Safe product life cycle: Faller Packaging and Schubert-Pharma jointly develop packaging solutions for biopharmaceuticals.

After the market launch of a new drug, it is a challenge for pharmaceutical manufacturers to calculate production capacities without incurring economic losses. A new solution from Faller Packaging and Schubert-Pharma now helps to minimise the investment risk.

To obtain marketing authorisation for a drug, pharmaceutical manufacturers must provide packaging that fulfils all typical industry requirements. Every day counts when it comes to the market launch. Because the sooner a product is available everywhere, the sooner patients benefit and the high development costs pay off.

However, the production of pharmaceuticals must be quickly adapted to the increasing demand. In the beginning, manually loaded packaging will suffice, a successful launch requires a solution that can be automated as quickly as possible. However, many months can pass before a new authorisation with machine-compatible packaging and the commissioning of a system. Conversely, manufacturers who build up a high production capacity before the launch bear a high investment risk.

With the right partners, this challenge becomes an economic advantage: Faller Packaging and Schubert-Pharma support manufacturers from Clinical Trial Phase 3 onwards with a customised packaging solution that is already designed for the entire product life cycle. A subsequent format change for the packaging material is therefore not necessary. Karin Kleinbach, Sales Manager at Schubert-Pharma, explains: „Our customers get Seamless service for every level of automation, from launch to series production."

The experts work with customers to develop pharmaceutical-compliant and fully recyclable carton packaging for all parenterals and a wide variety of dosage forms such as vials, ampoules, syringes, medical devices and combination products. At the same time the cooperation partners plan and realise top-loading packaging processes from manual to fully automated.

For manual to fully automated packaging

For bridging machine delivery times and for smaller quantities, the PrePackaging service from Faller are available: With the delivery of pre-assembled pharmaceutical packaging, manual filling at the customer's premises is possible. With a medium packaging volume, manufacturers can already use this filling partially automated with the mobile Schubert cobots. For full automation, Schubert-Pharma develops customised and reliable top-loading packaging systems in accordance with international standards. The better the machine and packaging are harmonised, the more efficient and reliable the automated packaging process will be.

„This is why it is so important to plan the packaging materials - i.e. folding carton, package leaflet and adhesive label - early on in the development of a new medicine.“

Kerstin Löffler, Vice President Marketing, Corporate Communications & ESG at Faller Packaging

This is because pharmaceutical manufacturers, together with Faller and Schubert-Pharma, not only shorten the time-to-market, but also packaging safer and more cost-efficient over the entire product life cycle.
