The consumption of vegan and vegetarian food is becoming a megatrend. This is motivating even renowned meat producers such as Ponnath Die Metzgermeister GmbH to expand its range. The company's vegan hack is now packaged in eTray.
Absolute Vegan Empire (AVE) from Nabburg in the Upper Palatinate has been part of the Ponnath Group since 2017. As its latest development, the company has now launched vegan mince onto the market. It is made on the basis of soya proteins with other plant-based ingredients, including coconut fats and natural spices. Those responsible at the Ponnath Group found the right packaging solution in eTray®, a joint development by Sealpac GmbH from Oldenburg and Jaun Neoform GmbH from Gomaringen.
eTray - less plastic, more communication
The fibre-based MAP packaging consists of two components: a high-quality printable cardboard die-cut and a thin plastic inlay that only serves as a sealing and functional medium. The The amount of plastic material required for the dimensionally stable and process-safe shell is 40 to 60 per cent less than for conventional MAP shells. Mono-PP is used instead of APET for this innovative, resource-saving solution. This also fulfils the new guidelines of the food retail industry, which now demands packaging materials based on polyolefins. The high-quality printability on both sides of the cardboard carrier offers users such as Ponnath plenty of space for communication - in addition to product information, for example. also for instructions on the disposal of packaging components.
Process-safe, separable and completely recyclable
For reliable processing of eTray trays in 190 x 144 mm format Ponnath uses a Trayselaer Sealpac A7 with 5-cavity mould at its Freiburg plant. This machine and sealing mould configuration gives the company maximum flexibility in application, as it can also be used to seal conventional 190 mm standard trays.
The trays are stacked and filled fully automatically in the packaging process at a high cycle rate. Thanks to reliable sealing and the best Barrier properties that do not differ from those of pure plastic trays, eTray stands for® for maximum product safety. The design of the eTray tray makes it easy to separate the materials into cardboard and plastic once the product has been removed. The tray simply needs to be pressed together. Both components break apart and can be disposed of via the appropriate recycling collections. The components are 100 per cent recyclable.
