
Neste, Mitsui Chemicals and Prime Polymers have developed packaging made from renewable materials for a seaweed snack from Co-op. The packaging is certified by a mass balancing of the Japanese Eco-Mark label.
Nests, Mitsui Chemicals and Prime Polymer, a subsidiary of Mitsui Chemicals, are working together on more sustainable packaging for CO-OP, a brand of the Japanese Consumers Co-operative Union (JCCU). In the first phase of the collaboration bio-based raw materials replace fossil raw materials in the production of packaging material for a seaweed snack. In future, the companies want to bio-based raw materials for the packaging of other products as well use.

Neste provides renewable Neste RE, a raw material for plastics made entirely from bio-based raw materials. Mitsui Chemicals and Prime Polymer turn it into renewable polypropylene under the brand name Prasus, which then becomes food packaging for JCCU. Packaging made from renewable raw materials has the same quality and properties as packaging made from fossil raw materials. The only difference is the better CO2-balance of the packaging and the Replacement of fossil raw materials in their production. The renewable materials are allocated to the plastic packaging using the mass balance method. The packaging for the seaweed snack is the first packaging made from renewable plastics via mass balancing to receive the Japanese Eco Mark certificate.
