Every year, around eight million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in our oceans. Gerresheimer is committed to returning plastic waste to the material cycle. In addition to the already established cosmetics packaging made from various blends of recycled PET (rPET), the company now also offers rPET made from ocean-bound plastic. Gerresheimer presented this offer to its customers for the first time at Luxepack in Monaco.
”We are delighted to present this material to our customers for their sustainability concepts. I am sure that we will be able to address their needs even better in order to produce sustainable packaging for care and cosmetic products together,“ says Niels Düring, Global Executive Vice President Plastic Packaging. The packaging material is suitable for care products and cosmetics packaging for a wide variety of products such as shower gels, hair shampoos, body lotions, facial cleansing products and various creams.
No significant difference to PET virgin material
Niels Düring and his team see very clear advantages in its use: The plastic collected from the oceans consists of made from 100 per cent PET and is recyclable. As less energy is required for recycling, the CO2-demand during production. As a result, recycling saves both raw materials and energy.
Gerresheimer has carried out a complete dimensional analysis of the material together with a functional test. The results show that it no significant difference between this material and untreated PET material is available. Only the basic colour of the ocean-bound material differs slightly from the PET virgin material.
Gerresheimer obtains the recycled, ocean-bound plastic from an experienced and certified partner company, which collects the material and selects and processes it accordingly for use in production.
