Packaging solutions made from hemp and mycelium for the German market

Das niederländische Unternehmen Grown.bio produziert unter anderem Schutzverpackungen auf Myzel-Basis. Im deutschsprachigen Raum setzt man nun auf Fixum Creative Technology mit Sitz in Neuwied als exklusiven Vertriebs- sowie zukünftigen Produktionspartner.

The Dutch company Grown.bio produces sustainable protective packaging based on mycelium, among other things. In German-speaking countries, the biotechnology company is now relying on Fixum Creative Technology, based in Neuwied, as its exclusive sales and future production partner.

"Our two companies are a perfect match. We have the same size and culture. Mycelium Packaging is also an important building block in our sustainable product strategy," explains Michael Arndtfounder and managing director of Fixum.

Utilising mycelium composite technology

MycoComposite, also known as Mycelium or Mushroom Packaging, is a sustainably produced material made from Mycelium and local agricultural waste. Mycelium refers to the fungal filaments that grow together to form a network and form the vegetative system of the fungi. Biomass present in the soil is bound and decomposed. The company utilises this natural binder Grown.bio to use: Not only packaging, but also design objects and even insulation panels grow in moulds there.

Currently, hemp hurds are mainly used as recycled waste material, as hemp binds four times more carbon than wood. During production, growth requires a minimum amount of energy. This results in a total of CO2-negative product. Thanks to the exclusively natural ingredients, products and packaging can be 100 per cent recycled, according to the company.  home composting and decompose at the end of the life cycle. The process utilises mycelium composite technology, which was developed and patented by Ecovative Design in the USA.

Alternative to protective packaging made of plastic foams

The end product has a damping effect and protects the products packaged with it. It insulated against both heat and cold and is lightweight and water-repellent, yet it can be produce in almost any design
