As part of its annual Christmas donation, the Karlovy Vary-based company Herrmann Ultraschall is donating 10,000 euros to the non-profit organisation The Ocean Cleanup, which aims to rid 90 percent of the world's oceans of floating plastic by 2040.

„With our ultrasonic welding technology, we can contribute to a functioning circular economy. But we know that many plastic products are still not disposed of properly and end up in the environment instead„ says CEO Thomas Herrmann, explaining the motivation behind the donation. „That's why we want to help collect the valuable raw material again to prevent damage to nature.“

For the extraction uses The Ocean Cleanup specially developed collection systems. With the help of ocean currents, plastic parts ranging in size from several metres to a few millimetres can be collected without disturbing local ecosystems. The collected plastic is to be recycled and reused for the manufacture of new products. The systems are currently being used primarily to clean up the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, but are expected to contribute to the global removal of plastic waste in the future.
