When it gets hot for food packaging

High-temperature laminated films ensure that food can be packaged hygienically. The new allflex UHT tolerates temperatures of up to 121 °C and is therefore suitable for the hygienic sterilisation of food.

Whether for cooking, simmering, pasteurising, sterilising or heating in the microwave: High-temperature laminated films ensure that food can be packaged hygienically.

The new allflex UHT (Ultra High Temperature) composite film from allvac Folien GmbH tolerates temperatures of up to 121 °C for up to one hour. The material is therefore suitable for the hygienic sterilisation of corn, beetroot and other foods. This high temperature tolerance is made possible by a polypropylene sealing layer. Thanks to the high transparency and increased impact resistance, the food packaged in them also cuts a fine figure on the shelves.

„The use of polypropylene and special adhesion promoters increases the temperature resistance of the film without causing delamination or open sealing seams in the sterilisation and cooking process. Thanks to the 11-layer structure and the cast co-extrusion process, we have also optimised the film quality in terms of transparency and impact resistance.“ Thomas Herbst, Sales Manager at allvac Folien GmbH.

The allflex UHT is an extension of the company's allflex series and can be used on all standard thermoforming machines. As Flexible co-extruded high-temperature composite film with PA/PP medium barrier it creates temperature ranges from -40 °C to +121 °C. Polyamide (PA) ensures a good barrier and mechanical resilience of the film. Polypropylene (PP) ensures a temperature resistance of up to +121 °C.

Safe food: hygienic packaging protects against spoilage

The allflex UHT is primarily used in the convenience sector as a safe packaging solution for pre-prepared food and ready meals. These can be heated for consumption directly in the high-temperature laminated film. „Hygienic packaging protects food from spoilage. And that is an important building block for sustainable food processing. Especially with regard to Safe Food. Sometimes you just can't do without plastic,“ emphasises Herbst. As a subsidiary of the allfo Group, allvac has been a member of Safe Food, the joint initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Messe Düsseldorf GmbH.

In addition to convenience, the allflex UHT is also predestined for the so-called sous-vide method, i.e. vacuum cooking. Here, meat, fish, vegetables and fruit are vacuum-packed in bags. The food is gently cooked at a low temperature - sometimes for over six hours. The result: incomparable flavours and textures as well as more vitamins and nutrients. The Shrink-wrapped food cannot dry out or oxidise. The sous vide method can also intensify the natural colour of the products.

Broad spectrum for high-temperature laminated film

The packaging specialist allvac manufactures its allflex UHT high-temperature laminate film, as well as its other allflex film types, at the company headquarters in Waltenhofen, Bavaria. The new cast coextrusion line can produce films in thicknesses from 50 to 350 metres. „Our allflex series is an all-rounder. It not only has a broad processing spectrum, but is also so flexible and robust that it forgives minor operator errors and incorrect machine settings during processing,“ emphasises Herbst.
