The Industrievereinigung Kunststoffverpackungen (IK) is pleased about the revised DIN 6120 standard, which now offers manufacturers of plastic packaging the opportunity to label the use of recycled plastic in a standardised way.

The IK suggested the updating of DIN 6120 and made the main technical contributions, the association writes in a press release. The responsible IK consultant Dr Fang Luan considers the current version to be a „practical revision“ and continues: „For us, the initiative to revise the standard is a logical consequence of the wide range of activities in favour of a higher standardisation level. Use of recyclate in Plastic packaging."

Recyclate content is now labelled

The standard now regulates how plastics with the specification of the percentage by mass of the Recyclate be labelled. In addition, the labelling for Plastic composites prescribed. Another new feature is the labelling for products made of a plastic that is not listed in the standard, such as PET, HDPE, PVC, LDPE, PP and PS. Another important change is the deletion of the additional designation 07, which was previously used for other materials.

The new DIN 6120 is not binding. The specifications contained therein are not legally binding as long as they have not been cited in laws or laid down in contracts. Nevertheless, the IK recommends that its members use uniform labelling in accordance with the standard in order to create transparency and comparability of plastic products.
