Joint project makes the spray head sustainable

Werner & Mertz is making its packaging even more sustainable and is going into detail: A new spray head is the first to feature post-consumer recycled content in the mechanical components. It is the result of a joint project with Berry Global.

Werner & Mertz is making its packaging even more sustainable and is going into detail: A new spray head is the first to feature post-consumer recycled content in the mechanical components. It is the result of a joint project with Berry Global.

The bottles of washing and cleaning products from Werner & Mertz have been made from 100 % used plastic since 2014 and are fully recyclable; now the cooperation partners want to set a new recycling standard with this sustainable spray pump.

The Weight of the spray head has been reduced to a minimum. It is the lightest spray pump of its kind, weighing 18 per cent less than standard triggers on the German market.

The Spray performance has been optimised once again, and the spray pump is even more powerful than the previous model and can handle at least 5,000 pump strokes. This corresponds to more than eleven refills of an original Frosch bottle at home.

Spray head is fully recyclable

The spray head is completely recyclable because it consists of only one group of plastics, polyolefins: 97.6 per cent is made of polypropylene, only the valves, which make up 2.4 per cent of the total weight, are made of polyethylene.

Both polymers belong to the same polymer group and can be mixed during recycling. The spray head also features a high proportion of recyclate in the functional, internal components of the pump mechanism for the first time (29 %) - a technical innovation that was developed in a record time of just two years as part of the joint collaboration.

Several technical hurdles overcome

In the course of the development work, the two cooperation partners overcame several technical hurdles. This is because PP recyclates have different technical properties than virgin plastics specially adapted to the injection moulding process. The challenge: the properties of the significantly softer recyclate had to be compensated for by a completely new design. In addition, the optimum sliding properties of the piston and cylinder, which had previously been achieved by using different plastics, had to be produced exclusively with PP.

Immo Sander, Head of Packaging Development at Werner & Mertz

„The aim of our joint project was to consistently and uncompromisingly realise all elements of a powerful and at the same time recyclable spray and foam pump for cleaning agents. And we achieved this perfectly!“

Together, the two companies have managed to use as little material as possible for the spray head, maximise the proportion of recycled material and at the same time guarantee durability and resistance. The modular design of the system with various nozzle options enables convenient spraying and foaming of the cleaning agent.

The innovative spray head will be successively used on all Frosch brand cleaner bottles as well as the Green Care Professional and Tana Professional brands.
