The German deposit system primarily covers drinks bottles - but return options are now also being considered in other areas. The Kaufland supermarket chain is now trialling returnable jars for its own unpackaged packaging stations in selected shops in southern Germany.

For the first time Department store Food in deposit jars. This offer is initially a test in ten shops in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg. Customers can choose from up to 90 items, including muesli, rice, couscous, sugar, flour, porridge, jelly babies and various nuts and dried fruit. „The responsible and resource-conserving design of our product range is our top priority. We are therefore constantly testing new options for sustainable and simple purchasing,“ says Robert Pudelko, Head of Sustainability Purchasing. „With these returnable jars, we offer another innovative and practical solution to avoid packaging materials such as plastic, in addition to the unpackaged stations."

The food in the deposit jars comes from Eco Terra, a supplier specialising in the supply of unpackaged foods. The company is committed to preserving biodiversity, respecting traditional knowledge and ensuring that everyone involved in the supply chain receives a fair share of the added value.
