Kneipp uses folding carton packaging made from Silphie paper for its lip care. The company wants to use more bio-based materials as part of its sustainability strategy. The new folding carton can be disposed of as usual with the waste paper.

Kneipp is using a new raw material to produce the packaging for its lip care range. Silphie paper replaces the previously used grass paper. The decision to switch to silphia was made because the plant is fully utilisable.

"We initially use the silphia fibres to produce the cardboard for the new lip care folding box. The remaining fibres from the plant are used in biogas plants to generate energy. Even the fermentation residues are then used again - as fertiliser for new silphia fields."

The Silphie folding carton consists of 35% Silphie fibres and can be disposed of by consumers as usual in waste paper and thus recycled. This aspect is also part of the strategy for more sustainable packaging. Until By the end of 2023, all of the company's packaging should be recyclable. be. Currently, this figure is already 75 per cent. The lip balm will be available in stores with a new box from the end of October.

Originally from North America, the silphia plant is a very rapidly renewable raw material. Silphie is hardy and is grown regionally in large quantities. This means that transport routes and the associated CO2-emissions saved can be realised. The Fraunhofer Institute for Environmental, Safety and Energy Technology UMSICHT also rates the eco-balance of Silphie paper positively: Silphie fibre production has a lower impact on the environment than pulp production. In the cultivation area, the Silphie plant has a positive effect on biodiversity. It is insect-friendly, binds CO2 and forms humus.

"Sebastian Kneipp already emphasised the importance of living in balance with nature. The preservation of biodiversity is therefore a relevant criterion for us. That's why it was an additional argument in favour of silphia for us that it is a plant that is popular with bees."
