Less plastic in advent calendars

Confectionery manufacturer Fazer relies on a lightweight, dispersion-coated board from Metsä Board for its Advent calendars.

To reduce the amount of waste and the use of plastic, confectionery manufacturer Fazer uses lightweight, dispersion-coated cardboard from Metsä Board for its Advent calendars.

The switch to the new material rThe consumption of plastic is reduced by 1200 kg per year compared to the previous PE-coated cardboard.. In addition, the Advent calendar is now more recyclable as the wood fibres can be completely recycled. The lightweight cardboard quality also supports the circular economy and reduces the amount of waste, CO2- footprint of the Advent calendar is reduced by a quarter thanks to the light weight and resource efficiency of the new material.

„Climate protection and the circular economy are important issues for Fazer. The switch to the new material is part of our responsible packaging programme, which is divided into three pillars: Reducing material consumption, developing innovative, more environmentally friendly packaging solutions and improving the recyclability of our packaging. For Advent calendars, the chocolate has to be protected by a material that usually contains plastic. This year, we are replacing the PE-coated material with a recyclable cardboard from Metsä Board.“

„Our virgin fibre cartonboard offers the necessary safety for Advent calendars, especially where chocolate and cartonboard come into direct contact. Our dispersion-coated cartonboard is also characterised by its sensory neutrality. In practice, this means that the first-class flavour of the chocolate is retained until it is eaten.“
