Paper specialist Metsä Board is organising the „Better with Less - Design Challenge“ for the third time in 2022. The aim is to find packaging solutions that are easy to recycle. One month before the prizes are announced, the jury explains the role that the circular economy plays in the competition.
This year, the focus of the „Better with Less - Design Challenge“ is on packaging solutions that are easy to recycle, use resources more efficiently and generate no waste. The competition was launched on 1 June and will run until 1 December 2022. In a newly released video, the nine renowned jury members explain the circular economy and the role that packaging designers have to play in it.
According to jury member Andrew Gibbs, founder and editor-in-chief of The Dieline, the packaging industry has reached a turning point where it is becoming clear that the circular economy is becoming increasingly prevalent. It has been established that 83 per cent of younger consumers are prepared to spend and pay more for sustainable brands. Fellow jury member Jennifer Patrick, Global Director of Packaging and Branding at Patagonia, sees one of the biggest challenges in the development of new packaging concepts in minimising material consumption.
High-calibre jury
The jury will honour the three best zero-waste packaging concepts with prizes of 10,000, 3,000 and 2,000 euros. An additional prize for students is an internship at the company's own Excellence Centre in Äänekoski, Finland.
