In a co-creation workshop at the Metsä Boards Excellence Centre in Äänakoski, a new golf ball packaging was created for the Finnish company Golf Coat Oy, which can be transformed into an insect hotel after use.

The Finnish company Golf Coat Oy is launching a new wooden-look golf ball packaging that can be transformed into an insect hotel once the contents have been removed. The lid of the packaging contains a cardboard insert with various cut-outs. The packaging is produced by PackageMedia Oy, a Pyroll Packaging company, using MetsäBoard Pro FBB Bright folding boxboard.

Convertible golf ball packaging developed through teamwork

The new golf ball packaging is the result of a project developed by Metsä Board organised co-creation workshops. These workshops are part of Metsä Board's „360° Services“ - a service offering that covers the entire packaging value chain and includes the Excellence Centre in Äänekoski, Finland. The design of the golf ball packaging was created in collaboration between a packaging design agency, Metsä Board's internal packaging design team, the packaging manufacturer and Metsä Board's technical service department.

„Packaging is an excellent example of how you can create something completely new through teamwork. In 2021, we held 36 virtual workshops with our customers and partners. We focused on optimising the existing packaging and at the same time creating something completely new - such as this insect hotel.“ Gunilla Nykopp, Customer Experience Manager in the packaging design team at Metsä Board
