Metsä Board has been successful in an innovation competition organised by the City of Helsinki and Business Finland with a recyclable packaging concept for takeaway products in the catering industry. It is one of seven companies taking part in a pilot project that will run until the end of May 2019.
The Innovation competition aims to develop new technical processes and other innovative solutions for food and its production, including in the areas of Packaging, Circular economy and clean technologies.
60 companies submitted concepts
Around 60 companies submitted concepts for the competition. Only seven were selected for the Pilot project have been selected. The competition jury is made up of representatives from the city of Helsinki, the University of Helsinki and the business community.
The concept with which Metsä Board involved in the project, involves the entire Packaging value chain with it. With a consumer study at the start of the pilot phase, the Finnish manufacturer of Premium fresh fibre board the requirements for development.
Current takeaway packaging is fraught with compromises
„The current Gastronomy The takeaway packaging used is characterised by functional compromises or is not considered environmentally friendly by consumers. The participants in the study also stated that today's packaging does not meet the standards of premium packaging,” explains Leena Yliniemi, Technical Marketing Director at Metsä Board.
In the following, Metsä Board produced a packaging made of a board quality that is suitable for direct Food contact and can be recycled. It can also be easily customised according to the individual wishes of the catering business. The Finnish company Cadpack Oy was responsible for the design and production. Package Testing & Research Oy is responsible for the coordination of the pilot phase and the Consumer study responsible.
