Packaging and paper group Mondi, together with cheese packaging company Hazeleger Kaas and brand owner Westland Kaas, has packaged the well-known Dutch brand Maaslander in EnvelopeForm, a new, fully recyclable polypropylene (PP) mono-material packaging.

Most sliced cheese in the Netherlands is still packaged in mixed material films that are difficult to recycle. This new packaging has a PP top and bottom film for thermoforming applications and a PP label instead of a paper label, so that the new solution can be fully recycled. The packaging has been certified as recyclable by the German institute cyclos-HTP.

Packaging important for sustainable approach

Hazeleger has been committed to sustainability for more than two decades and has been certified by several institutions that recognise its commitment to socially responsible working practices. This commitment to sustainability also meant taking a look at their packaging.

„When we started looking for a new sustainable solution in 2018, our standards were already very high. To keep our cheese fresh, the packaging had to offer the same barrier protection as the previous film and be lighter in weight. Mondi worked very closely with us to trial and test the best packaging solutions. In the end, the lighter film and improved product-to-package ratio allowed us to reduce the amount of plastic used by 23 %. This allows us to save 9.2 tonnes of plastic per year“
Andre Roeterdink, Procurement Manager at Hazeleger Kaas.
