The Mondi Consumer Goods Packaging Group has been on a „basic ice cream course“ so to speak, admits Christian Höglund, Head of Development for the ice cream packaging business at Mondi. In 2016, the Group took over the Turkish manufacturer of flexible packaging Kalenobel. Since then, Mondi has been realigning the policy of the company from Kirklareli in the European north of Turkey. Mondi sees great potential in the ice cream packaging business.
Many ideas are in demand in order to survive in the seasonal, highly diversified Ice cream packaging business to be successful, Mondi reports. Kalenobel has 550 employees and, according to the new owner, aims to establish itself as a packaging innovator in the „ice cream world“. „We are a real key player for complete solutions from a single source in the ice cream packaging market,“ says Sedat İğbar, Commercial Manager Europe, describing Mondi Kalenobel's expertise
When developing new products, Mondi can draw on its existing network of companies. The acquisition of Kalenobel opens up new opportunities for co-operation. As an example, Christian Höglund cites the trial production of plastic-free ice cream packaging without polymer coating. This utilises the expertise gained in the production of kraft paper at our own production sites.

Bag banderoles with window for New Zealand
Kraft paper is used in combination with aluminium for Ice cream cone banderoles utilised. At Mondi Kalenobel, an ice cream banderole was recently produced with a transparent Plastic windows, which draws the consumer's attention to the sugar wafer behind it.
The ice cream cone sleeve with the clear, transparent, oval sleeve window is 2.3 cm high and 1.8 cm wide. It was produced at the customer's request Oexmann GmbH & Co. KG from Gelsenkirchen, which supplies speciality banderoles all over the world. In this case, a sleeve was required for the New Zealand ice cream manufacturer Fonterra Brands. The viewing window was to be provided with a biodegradable plastic film.
„We were the only supplier willing to take on this task,“ says Sedat İğbar. „Step by step, in collaboration with Oexmann, we developed and patented a cone sleeve that shows ice cream lovers the sweet cone inside the packaged cone.“ Since May 2018, corresponding Ice cream cones now already sold.

A window is also lasered into the lid of the ice cream cone
Mondi Kalenobel made a further proposal to the customer from the southern hemisphere. Not only the bag sleeve should have a viewing window, but also the Ice cream cone lid. For this, Kalenobel designed a small foiled window in the ice-cream cone lid, which corresponds to the outline of the New Zealand island of Kapiti and is laser-cut into the lid. The customer liked the proposed solution. Mondi now supplies the cone sleeves and the ice-cream cone lids.

According to Euromonitor, the global retail sector generates around 74 billion dollars a year from the sale of ice cream. 30 per cent of this turnover is generated in Europe. Mondi believes that it already has a strong position in the ice cream packaging market and wants to expand this position even further. By 2019, global production capacities are to be better adapted to the regional seasonal business. The new Turkish plant will play a central role in this.
