With Protector Bag ExpandForm, Mondi has developed a paper bag solution with an expandable function for the secure roll packaging of mattresses. This allows plastic packaging to be replaced by a flexible and recyclable alternative.
Protector Bag ExpandForm is customisable and can be expanded to different sizes while holding the mattress securely. The packaging is made from kraft paper from Mondi that is responsibly sourced, renewable and recyclable, contributing to a circular economy. The paper packaging is puncture-resistant and suitable for printing, so that brand manufacturers can personalise their deliveries with a high-quality finish. Unlike plastic, the paper layers are also breathable and can release gases that can easily evaporate with this new packaging.
Megaflex Schaumstoff is a family-run manufacturer of flexible foams and finished mattresses and sleep products and is the first to protect its products with this new packaging. The close cooperation between Mondi, Megaflex Schaumstoff and the machine manufacturer FillMatic ensured a smooth and quick changeover from the current plastic solution, which was the first to use the new packaging. Ready for use with just a few adjustments to the packaging machines was. Looking to the future, the mattress manufacturer plans to replace its entire range of plastic roll packaging with paper by the end of 2023 by using Mondi's Protector Bag ExpandForm.
Plastic roll packaging can expand by up to 200 per cent during transport, taking up space and possibly deforming the outer cardboard packaging. One advantage of the Protector Bag ExpandForm is therefore that it is dimensionally stable - This saves shipping and storage costs.
