In future, bicycle manufacturer Diamant will no longer protect its mountain and trekking bikes with plastic film but with recyclable paper. The packaging for this comes from Mondi.

This means that Mondi into the bicycle packaging market. With its Protektor Bags made of paper, Mondi provides a new sustainable solution for Diamant to replace the plastic packaging used around the handlebars of its Trek and Diamant brands.

Germany's oldest bicycle manufacturer will now use Mondi's recyclable Protector Bags, which are made from renewable materials. This change means that Diamant will reduce its plastic consumption by 16 tonnes per year - that's about 85 % compared to before - while also saving on logistics and transport costs.

Storage and transport costs significantly reduced

The pre-made paper bags do not require additional wrapping or gluing as they are ready to use with a customised sealing strip specifically designed for the bicycle industry. Made from two layers of paper, Mondi's Protector Bags are strong and flexible, making them highly puncture resistant - and they protect bikes during storage and transport with a softer, friction-resistant inner glaze. Thanks to the air permeability of paper, the bags are also breathable. In addition, rubber handlebar grips can release moisture or gases, which can easily evaporate with this new packaging.

Storage and transport costs have been significantly reduced: The Protector Bags are supplied flat, which means more can be transported on a pallet, allowing for more cost-effective stacking compared to plastic bubble wrap rolls that transport excess air. In addition, Mondi produces the paper bags at its plant in Trebsen in Germany, which is only an hour away from Diamant's factory, compared to the previous bubble wrap alternative, which was sourced from abroad.
