Neste offers chemical recycling as a complete solution

Neste has acquired the European rights to Alterra Energy's liquefaction technology, strengthening its efforts to promote chemical recycling.

Neste has acquired the European rights to Alterra Energy's liquefaction technology and can thus offer chemical recycling as a complete solution: from plastic waste to product in the form of drop-in raw materials for the production of new polymers and chemicals.

Alterra Energy is a company based in the USA, which operates a has developed its own thermochemical technology for liquefying plastics that are difficult to recycle. In Akron, Ohio, the company already operates a large-scale plant that processes used plastics into an intermediate product that can be further processed into raw materials for new plastics and other petrochemical products.

Nests In 2020, the company acquired a minority interest in Alterra Energy. In a series of test runs, Neste has used liquefied plastic waste, which was also sourced from Alterra Energy, among others, in aprocessed at its refinery in Finland.

Together with Ravago, Neste also intends to establish a joint venture, to utilise Alterra Energy's technology in Vlissingen, the Netherlands. In addition, Neste is currently conducting a feasibility study to expand the processing capacity for liquefied plastic waste at its refinery in Porvoo, Finland, in order to examine investments in pre-treatment and upgrading capacities.

Through chemical recycling, the company aims to minimise Reduce dependence on new fossil resources and accelerate the transition to a circular economy in the production of polymers and chemicals.

„By acquiring the rights to Alterra Energy's technology in Europe, we can offer our partners a holistic solution. Neste can thus offer chemical recycling as a complete solution: from plastic waste to the product in the form of high-quality drop-in raw materials for the production of new polymers and chemicals.“

Partnerships along the value chain

With a clear goal, more than one million tonnes of plastic waste per year from 2030 Neste continues to focus on collaboration with other companies along the plastics value chain. This includes upstream partners such as recycling companies and technology developers, as well as production partners in the chemical industry and brand owners looking for more sustainable circular solutions.

The joint development of the technology with Alterra Energy and the continuous processing of mixed plastics in the Akron plant have Nests We are convinced that Alterra Energy's technology is a successful solution for the liquefaction of plastic waste.

While Neste has acquired the European rights to the technology, Alterra Energy will continue to operate independently outside Europe, to commercialise the technology through licensing. As a partner and shareholder, Neste is committed to supporting the continuous development of Alterra Energy's technology and establishing it as one of the leading solutions for chemical recycling of plastic waste on a global scale.
