The new „Freeze-Lock“ cryo-label from Schreiner Medipharm can withstand extreme sub-zero temperatures. Two layers ensure secure adhesion and legibility of the information

To ensure the effectiveness of drugs for cell and gene therapies, they have to be processed, stored and transported at extreme sub-zero temperatures. For Labelling on deep-frozen medicine containers has Schreiner MediPharm has now developed a label that can permanently withstand these freezing temperatures: the „Freeze-Lock“ cryo-label. The two interlocking layers of the label ensure reliable adhesion and legibility of the product information.

The design of the innovative label is based on an upper and a lower label: in the first step, the lower label layer is with a special, microfine surface structure is applied to the unfilled, uncooled container at room temperature. The container is then filled with the active ingredient and immediately brought to sub-zero temperatures of dry ice (-78 °C) or liquid nitrogen (-196 °C) for storage.

Special two-component label design

To subsequently label the frozen container, it is taken out of the freezer, the upper label layer is dispensed and pressed firmly onto the lower label - any layer of ice does not need to be removed. The freezer adhesive on the top label bonds with the structure of the bottom label and freezes within seconds. This creates a firm connection between the label construction and the vessel, which can be stored and transported in a deep-frozen state.

Thanks to the special two-component label design and the materials and adhesives used, the „Freeze-Lock“ cryo-label adheres reliably to the frozen container and important product information cannot be lost. This enables pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical manufacturers and users in clinical research to an individual and efficient labelling solution of frozen medicines and can be adapted for a wide range of applications.
