Oxygen barrier for food packaging

Henkel and Siegwerk have developed a solution for recyclable flexible food packaging with an oxygen barrier.

Henkel and Siegwerk have jointly developed a solution for recyclable flexible packaging. An oxygen barrier makes food packaging highly recyclable, as the packaging is made from a single material.

The new solution from Handle and Siegwerk offers outstanding performance and also enables Flexible packaging made from a single material that is easier to recycle. The two companies share a pioneering spirit and a long history of success in terms of efficiency and food safety. They also share the conviction that the transition to a circular economy will require new technologies - and new forms of collaboration.

Representatives of the companies met in 2019 at the K-Fair and agreed to jointly develop a Oxygen barrier coating for more recyclable food packaging to develop. They are now preparing the market launch of this solution in North America and Europe and will present it at two trade fairs: K-Fair in Düsseldorf and Pack Expo in Chicago.

Working closely together, the companies shared their knowledge and explored ideas on how a barrier solution for flexible packaging can be created without compromising shelf life. The result? An industrially validated oxygen barrier coating that enables flexible packaging from a single material for dry foodstuffs and saves recyclers the problem of mixing materials. The product was recently recognised as recyclable by the APR (Association of Plastics Recyclers) Critical Guidance.
