The Cologne-based packaging manufacturer Papacks has announced its collaboration with the US beverage company Keurig Dr Pepper Inc. The aim of the partnership is to develop a fully recyclable and compostable paper bottle.

Keurig Dr Pepper sells the Dr Pepper, 7Up and Schweppes beverage brands in the USA, as well as other soft drinks and a variety of coffee and juice brands. The partnership now announced with Papacks is based on the self-imposed goal of reducing the use of virgin plastic by at least 20 per cent by 2025.

Papacks has specialised in paper packaging in previously unfamiliar areas of application. The product range includes paper containers for food-to-go as well as fibre-based cosmetic jars for a refill solution. And now the collaboration with Keurig Dr Pepper.

First prototype at the end of 2022

The aim is to design the entire packaging - including bottle, label, cap and closure - in such a way that it is compostable or can be recycled together with other paper products in most municipalities in the USA. The prototype of the new bottle is expected by the end of 2022. The plan is to test the innovation in selected products from KDP's entire beverage portfolio - from water and juices to carbonated drinks.
