Mondi and Reckitt have launched paper-based packaging for Finish dishwasher tabs. The new packaging uses 75 per cent less plastic, which has the potential to avoid more than 2,000 tonnes of plastic per year. The remaining plastic is used to reinforce the paper structure.
Mondi has helped Reckitt on its sustainability journey by designing paper-based packaging for its market-leading Finish dishwasher tabs. Packaging for dishwasher tabs needs to be sealable, durable and waterproof, so the Use of paper a challenge so far. However, by working closely together along Mondi's EcoSolutions approach, the companies were able to create a solution that is inherently sustainable: the new packaging for Finish has successfully 75 per cent of plastic replaced by responsibly sourced paper. The remaining plastic is used to reinforce the paper structure and as barrier protection to ensure the quality and security of the finish and a resealable closure.
The new paper-based packaging for Finish will initially launched exclusively at Carrefour in France, where the packaging can be recycled in the existing paper recycling streams. Any necessary adjustments following the initial market launch will be incorporated before the rollout in other countries over the next few years. After After the market launch, Reckitt will avoid more than 2,000 tonnes of plastic every year - that corresponds to 50 million 1-litre bottles.
„Removing plastic from our products is a priority for all Reckitt brands. We are constantly looking for new and innovative ways to improve the sustainability of our packaging and are committed to driving further packaging innovation. One of Reckitt's sustainability goals is to reduce the amount of virgin plastic in our packaging by half by 2030. The new packaging will not only save plastic, but is expected to emit 15 per cent less CO2-emissions over the entire life cycle of the product.“
Angela Naef, Chief Research & Development Officer at Reckitt
"With Reckitt, we were able to develop a paper-based packaging solution that reduces plastic consumption while still providing the necessary product protection. This project is a great example of Mondi's approach of using paper where possible and plastic where it makes sense. The packaging has been designed with sustainability in mind to minimise the impact on the environment. We look forward to working with Reckitt to continue testing and developing solutions to help them achieve their sustainability goals.“
