First recyclable laminate from Constantia Flexibles

Constantia Flexibles presents the first recyclable monomaterial based on polypropylene with high chemical resistance.

Pharmaceutical products place special demands on packaging and the materials used. Constantia Flexibles is now introducing the first recyclable mono-material based on polypropylene, which has a high chemical resistance to pharmaceutical products.

Perpetua Alta Combines „Design for Recycling“ guidelines with high chemical resistance. The monopolymer solution replaces the multi-material packaging that is often used for chemically aggressive products such as pharmaceutical liquid and gel formulations. This means that a wide range of pharmaceutical products can be packaged not only safely but also sustainably.

„With our Perpetua Alta innovation, we are highlighting the need for more sustainable packaging in the pharmaceutical industry. Our aim was to create a high-performance, recyclable solution. Although Perpetua Alta was developed for highly aggressive pharmaceutical products, it can also be used in other areas that require high chemical resistance, such as the food industry.“

Recyclable alternative

In addition, the certification from the German institute cyclos-HTP that the innovation achieves a material recovery rate of up to 96 per cent. is possible. The final proportion depends on the respective material composition. Conventional packaging for pharmaceutical products is usually not recyclable due to the use of different materials.

Alternatives, such as recyclable mono-polyethylene or mono-polypropylene laminates, can be reused but often do not offer the required chemical resistance for pharmaceutical products. Perpetua Alta is Resistant to hydroalcoholic gel - similar to multi-material laminates containing aluminium, which are considered to be particularly chemically resistant. Compared to conventional laminates, the new laminate offers product protection against oxygen, water vapour and light as well as a lower weight and higher efficiency.

Perpetua Alta is a Drop-in solution for existing packaging formats based on laminates, such as stick packs, sachets and strip packaging. As a rule, the machines do not need to be modified or even replaced - the existing production systems can continue to be used.

„Our R&D and product management team has worked hard to bring this more sustainable solution to life. We are proud of the successful innovation process and the result.“
