Recycling certification for mailing bags from Henkel

The cyclos-HTP Institute has certified Henkel's padded envelopes for recycling in the EU, Switzerland, Norway and the UK.

The cyclos-HTP Institute has certified Henkel's EPIX solution for padded envelopes for recycling. The mono-material mailing bags are compatible with the sorting and recycling systems in the EU, Switzerland, Norway and the UK.

As online retail continues to grow, so too does the urgency to develop more sustainable and recyclable packaging materials. The EPIX technology from Handle has already made a contribution to establishing paper as a viable option for shipping goods. On the one hand, multi-substrate mailing bags are being replaced by recyclable mono-materials. On the other hand, the EPIX padded envelope for increased impact resistance, without increasing the weight of the packaging. EPIX had already received the How2Recycle (USA) and OPRL (UK) recycling certifications.

„The cyclos-HTP Institute's rigorous evaluation and certification supports the performance and sustainability of the product concept. It gives brands the assurance that this solution is practical and sustainable, minimising the impact of their shipments while being in line with local recycling opportunities. Our innovative solution, which uses a revolutionary lightweight cushioning material instead of bubble wrap, offers excellent technical properties and ease of use, as well as lower processing costs compared to other types of packaging. To date, over one billion EPIX mailing bags have been successfully used to pack goods by several major online retailers, demonstrating the importance of the solution. EPIX technology facilitates the recyclability of paper, which is why it is an integral part of Henkel's sustainability and circular economy strategy.“

The certification process of the cyclos-HTP Institute determines the Recyclability of packaging depending on the proportion of recycled material recovered (paper fibres), which is available for the production of the starting material (new paper). EPIX comprises a portfolio of technologies that provide paper with additional properties, such as barrier protection, thermal insulation and impact resistance, so that brands benefit from outstanding packaging performance.
