Mondi and Veetee have launched a paper-based packaging for dry rice in the UK. The packaging is made from Mondi's recyclable FunctionalBarrier Paper and is a substitute for plastic.
According to the two companies, this is the first time that dry ice has been packaged in paper in the UK.
Veetee's packaging, which is made from Mondi's FunctionalBarrier Paper, offers a safe and robust alternative to traditional plastic packaging in the industry. As pioneers in the UK market, Veetee and Mondi have developed a paper-based solution for dry rice that is specifically designed to meet the needs of consumers for sustainable packaging.
It protects the products and supports Veetee's plastic reduction targets. Veetee's rice range has been available on the shelves in the new packaging since April.

Close cooperation in development
The two companies worked closely together throughout the entire development process. As with all food products, the characteristics of the packaging had to be matched to the contents to provide protection from moisture and ensure a long shelf life. Several experiments were carried out to find a customised solution that worked in every respect, while helping Veetee to save on plastic and produce recyclable packaging.
The new packaging has been certified by OPRL as widely recognised for kerbside collection of recyclable materials in the UK, making disposal easier for end consumers and supporting a circular economy. Thanks to the high printability of Mondi's FunctionalBarrier paper, Veetee is able to communicate the disposal instructions on the packaging and retailers can easily promote the brand and various products on shelf.
