The owner family of the Thimm Group has decided to sell their company to the Spanish Saica Group. This acquisition is a strategic step to further consolidate Saica's market position in Europe and expand its offering of sustainable packaging solutions.

Thimm, founded in 1949 and known for its sustainable corrugated cardboard packaging and display solutions, achieved a turnover of approximately €539 million in 2024. With around 2,500 employees and locations in Germany and Eastern Europe, the family-owned company has secured a firm place in the European packaging market. The owning family's decision to sell the company was made after an intensive phase of consolidation and strategic considerations for the long-term security of the company's future.

The Saica Group, headquartered in Zaragoza, Spain, is a heavyweight in the industry. With over 12,000 employees and a turnover of €3.962 billion in 2025, Saica has a strong presence in Western Europe, Poland, and the USA. The acquisition of Thimm significantly expands Saica’s geographical and operational network.

Strategic advantages and synergies

Mathias Schliep, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Thimm Group, emphasises the strategic advantages of this acquisition: „In a highly competitive market, only a few major players will gain market share in the future. By merging with Saica, we are securing the growth prospects and thus safeguarding the future for Thimm.“ The locations of both companies complement each other perfectly, enabling comprehensive coverage of the European market.

Saica plans to retain Thimm's existing structures to ensure continuity and security for customers and employees. This decision underscores the commitment to stability and the appreciation of the existing corporate culture. The long-standing cooperation in a strategic sales alliance and a joint venture in Poland has already strengthened the relationship between the two family-owned companies.

Future prospects

The acquisition provides Saica with the opportunity to enter markets where the company was not previously present and to further strengthen its market position in the European packaging sector.

The sale is subject to antitrust approval. The financial details of the transaction are subject to a confidentiality agreement.
