SIG uses ASI-certified aluminium

Since the beginning of the year, SIG has been using aluminium that is 100 percent ASI-certified for its aseptic carton packaging.

Since the beginning of the year, SIG has been using 100% ASI-certified aluminium for its aseptic carton packaging. The company wants to make the procurement of its materials more responsible and improve the quality of its supply chains.

SIG is the only packaging manufacturer to offer aseptic carton packs with ASI-certified aluminium, enabling customers to display the ASI label on their packs.

„Achieving 100 per cent ASI-certified aluminium for SIG's aseptic carton packs is another industry first and a significant milestone on our Way Beyond Good. We have already been purchasing 100 per cent FSC-certified raw board for our carton packs since 2021. We are now continuing on our path towards particularly responsible procurement by purchasing 100% ASI-certified aluminium. Customers can now display the ASI logo and the FSC label on all SIG packaging, showing consumers that these materials have been responsibly sourced.“

The company offers the world's first packaging material without an aluminium layer for aseptic carton packs since 2010 which was followed by others - including a packaging material with full barrier protection without an aluminium layer, which was launched in 2022. However, it is not yet available for all packaging formats, meaning that many of the aseptic carton packs still require an aluminium layer. require a wafer-thin layer of aluminium foil to protect the food contained in the packs.

With the ASI certification, the company demonstrates the Commitment to responsible procurement of aluminium. ASI sets pioneering standards for the responsible production and sourcing of aluminium, covering a broad spectrum ethical, environmental and social issues, including specific limits on carbon emissions in aluminium production.

„SIG was one of the first companies in the world to be certified to the ASI Chain of Custody and Performance Standards. The fact that all of SIG's aluminium suppliers are now 100% ASI-certified is a great achievement that supports the continuous improvements in the aluminium supply chain. The ability to display the ASI label on packaging is another option to communicate the message of responsible aluminium production and sourcing to consumers.“

Dr Fiona Salomon, CEO at ASI

Customers have been able to display the FSC label on every aseptic carton pack from SIG since 2016. Now, every carton pack from SIG can also be labelled with the ASI label to communicate the company's commitment to responsible sourcing to consumers. The FSC label can now be found on almost all SIG packs. The ASI label was already visible on almost 1.4 billion SIG packs in 2022. These labels on product packaging can have a broad positive impact by increasing consumer awareness and demand for responsibly sourced raw materials.

ASI-certified aluminium foil will be implemented as SIG's new standard for aseptic carton packs, starting with new customers and existing customers launching new SKUs or changing their pack design.
