Interactive packaging: when the smartphone connects

A Japanese company is making a new push in the area of interactive packaging. Packaging connects to the smartphone via NFC1 technology to offer consumers digital content such as games or music.

The idea behind this is to improve the customer and purchasing experience through the use of smartphones and other digital devices in product marketing. The new NFC-enabled packages from Toppan make it possible to offer a range of interactive customer experiences that are linked to smartphone apps.

Connection without Bluetooth

A wireless NFC-based connection is established when a smartphone is in the vicinity of the packaging. Bluetooth pairing is not required. Pad switches embedded in the packaging allow consumers to create interactive experiences by pressing or tapping to make sounds or control content on the smartphone screen via a compatible app. LEDs and other additional components can be integrated into the package to meet requirements depending on the purpose or conditions of use.

Premiere at Luxe Pack Shanghai

The controller is powered by the wireless NFC connection via the smartphone, so there is no need to integrate a battery into the housing. This energy can also be used to light up the LEDs embedded in the packaging.
