Something is happening in Scandinavia: As part of the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, there has been a change in the law, according to which packaging and closures may no longer be coloured with soot. Greif has therefore developed a plastic screw cap that is black but remains soot-free.
In response to the challenge of recycling black plastic, the company has Griffin has developed a soot-free plastic screw cap for its canisters. Conventional black plastics, which contain carbon black as a colouring agent, cannot be detected by recycling plants using near-infrared (NIR) technology and often end up in landfill. The new packaging material uses a alternative black colour that does not contain carbon.
„The new closures are easier to sort for recycling and we hope that in time they will become the standard across Europe and even globally. It's a small step, but it has a big impact and underlines our commitment to producing innovative, safe and high performance products with a low environmental impact. Innovations like this support our determination to strive for a low-carbon future and minimise the use of raw materials by developing new products and solutions that support a circular economy.“
