Verbund kompostierbare Produkte e.V. has written an open letter to the members of the German Bundestag. The association speaks out against the special tax on single-use plastics for ultra-light, compostable carrier bags and emphasises the advantages of the bags.
Ultra-light, compostable carrier bags are often used for fruit and vegetable bags. The German Compostable Products Association is now appealing to members of the German Bundestag to use such bags. Exempt bags from the special levy for single-use plastics. The bags offer „highly efficient multiple utilisation“ as defined by the amended Biowaste Ordinance.
On the one hand, the bags serve as Carrying aid when buying fruit and vegetables. They can then be used for the hygienic collection and disposal of biowaste. Finally, a proven Qualitative and quantitative increase in collected organic waste and reduction of organic waste in residual waste as well as avoiding illegal littering with the bags.
Verbund also refers to practical trials that have shown acceptance and approval on the part of consumers. and confirm the results of the Nova Institute on cascade utilisation as part of the BMEL-funded BioSinn project.
The letter continues: „Please help us to exempt these ultra-light, certified compostable carrier bags (shirt bags) from the upcoming special levy - due to the multiple use explained above, there is no basis for this. Instead, let us work together to return the valuable resource of organic waste to the natural cycle and take a significant step towards a sustainable, resource-conserving, climate-friendly and organic circular economy in Germany.“
