Schreiner MediPharm recently presented its sustainable closure seals for pharmaceutical packaging for the first time. They expand the portfolio of security solutions: On the one hand, they are perfectly adapted to the threat scenarios of the pharmaceutical supply chain and the respective outer packaging. Secondly, they are environmentally friendly and ecological.
The new closure seals not only offer a high level of functionality and tamper evidence, but also set an example for sustainability in the packaging industry. Since the introduction of the EU directive on counterfeit protection tamper-proof pharmaceutical packaging is indispensable. Security seals for outer packaging are a proven means of first-opening indication.
The planned EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) also calls for waste reduction, reusable packaging and recycled materials. Schreiner MediPharm is responding to this with an innovative closure seal made from sustainable film material. with a recycled content of up to 90 per cent, that fulfils the currently planned PPWR targets by 2040. These propose a minimum proportion of post-consumer recycled material (PCR) in plastic films of 65 per cent from 2040.
Schreiner MediPharm has carried out extensive tests in collaboration with the Schreiner ProSecure Competence Centre to ensure optimum material quality. With success: the sustainable seal shows comparable performance characteristics to conventional seals with regard to high transparency, optimum printability and high reliability of the first-opening indication.
The switch from conventional to sustainable upper materials made from recycled material leads to a Reduction of CO2-emissions by around 28 per cent at film level. In the product carbon footprint analysis, emission savings of up to 35 per cent can be achieved. The use of green electricity since 2013 and the implementation of modern heat pumps at the end of 2023 contribute to this environmental balance.
