After a 29-month live break and a purely digital edition in 2021, the organic and natural cosmetics industry came together again in recent days for the Biofach and Vivaness trade fair duo. 2.276 Exhibitors presented their offerings on site and on the supplementary digital platform, but with over 24,000 trade visitors, significantly fewer visitors came to Nuremberg than in 2020. We took a look around on site.

After you have Biofach After a long period in which there was hardly any sustainable packaging, followed by a brief interlude with lots of black plastic and paper-look plastic packaging, the industry has been rethinking its approach for several years now. And so the topic of packaging has also become increasingly present at the trade fair. However, some of the new products on the stand were categorised as „innovative packaging concepts“ that have long been standard outside the organic sector, such as refill bags or the use of mono-material.

Nevertheless, it was noticeable that currently bags for frozen food made from significantly thinner material and coffee packaging dispense with metallisation. When it comes to glass, many manufacturers rely on amber or green glass, which can be produced with less energy input and a higher proportion of used glass.

As in the conventional food and cosmetics market, the organic and natural cosmetics industry is also currently A lot packed in paper and cardboard. A number of natural cosmetics manufacturers offered deodorant sticks and lip balms in cardboard tubes. However, these are usually coated on the inside so that the solid personal care product does not become greasy. Some suppliers use an inner coating made from biodegradable PLA. However, this ends up in the waste water when the paper is recycled, which experts take a critical view of.

The young Berlin-based company truemorrow therefore completely dispenses with an inner coating on the packaging of its deodorant sticks and lip balms. According to the company, the contents are a natural product that can leave traces on the packaging. The Berliners also showed a New recyclable tube for toothpaste made from 50 per cent recycled material, which, including the cap, is made of mono-material. For its children's toothpaste, truemorrow has also developed an extra small tube opening, as children should only use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste.

The French company Bleu Vert presented a decorative wooden stick for its refillable solid deodorant. The The beech wood for this comes from certified French forests, French wood turners produce the wooden applicators by hand. In France, the Bô Stick launched two years ago, Bleu Vert is now looking for sales partners in Germany.

The young company also attaches particular importance to sustainable packaging Groovy Goods from Wuppertal. His environmentally friendly washing-up liquids, bathroom cleaners and the like in solid form are packed in grass cardboard, The environmentally friendly printing inks without antioxidants or microplastics come from PURe.

Solid products are currently the big trend in natural cosmetic products. Due to their low volume, they offer particular advantages for logistics and transport. There is now not only solid shampoo, solid soap and solid cleansing oil, but also solid shaving foam and solid aftershave. Speaking of natural care products for men: these are no longer in black packaging. It is well known that black plastic packaging in particular is not recognised in sorting plants and therefore usually ends up in incineration.
