With the integration of lock-style technology, Syntegon is launching the latest development of its proven Sigpack TTM cartoner platform. The Lock-Style process allows boxes and trays to be formed from cardboard blanks completely free of adhesives.
As trays do not require any further gluing steps to securely close the box, they are made from 100 per cent recyclable materials. The elimination of adhesives during the moulding process also minimises maintenance costs and allows manufacturers to keep their products in perfect condition. reduce energy, maintenance and material costs.
The controlled moulding process is one of the key functions of the TTM platform. It allows boxes or trays to be moulded precisely and therefore facilitates the Lock-style process, in which cardboard blanks are joined together instead of glued. Dispensing with adhesive in this process step not only significantly improves the recyclability of the finished packaging, but also saves material and costs.
In contrast, gluing machines are used in the classic gluing process. These leave behind adhesive residue and thin adhesive threads, also known as angel hair, which accumulate on the machine and need to be removed regularly. This maintenance effort is not required with the lock-style process. The elimination of the gluing units also offers a decisive advantage in terms of sustainability, as they consume the most electricity of all the cartoner components. By using glue-free moulding, manufacturers not only reduce their material consumption, but also their energy consumption.
"Lock-style technology is currently very popular with companies that want to make their production more sustainable. However, we can actually look back on almost 80 years of experience with glue-free cartons: back then, the founder of Kliklok, a Syntegon company, invented the first cartons with a tuck-in gusset. We have been continuously developing our expertise ever since."

Flexible conversion to glue-free moulding
Companies have the flexibility to choose between two options when integrating lock-style technology: They can order it as an option with a new TTM Topload cartoner. Alternatively, manufacturers can retrofit existing machines and benefit from the greater pack style flexibility of their system: With the retrofit kit, the TTM cartoner forms both glue-free cartons and cartons that are traditionally sealed with glue, and thus facilitates the changeover to sustainable packaging concepts. The changeover from classic gluing to the lock-style process takes no longer than a regular format change.
"The expansion of the TTM platform ensures a gradual switch to sustainable and therefore future-proof solutions. With lock-style technology, we are helping our customers to work in a resource-saving way - even beyond the use of alternative packaging materials," explains Mile.
