The Technoseum in Mannheim has been collecting advertising objects as evidence of social history for years - and is now presenting them in its own special exhibition.

„The Collection 3: Advertising and Selling“ is from 7 November 2019 to 1 June 2020 to see. The museum also provides insights into the work behind the scenes. Designed like a show depot, the exhibition features Enamel signs and tin cans, vending machines and cool boxes, neon signs and shopping bags - A total of more than 2,500 exhibits from around 1900 to the present day. The oldest object is a Tin can for rusks of the Stemler company.

„We show everyday situations in which people are confronted with advertising. This quickly makes it clear that there is basically no area of life in which advertising is not omnipresent,“ explains the head of the collection Dr Thomas Kosche the concept.

From Milka cows made from plush to a man-high sales stand in the shape of a Haribo bear: The show presents a wide range of objects, some aesthetically pleasing, many absurd or kitschy. Brands like Coca-Cola and Jägermeister are represented in the show, as are advertising campaigns that are largely forgotten today.

Display

„Our museum has at least 200,000 objects, the vast majority of which are not on display in the exhibitions. With this exhibition, we can show the public which treasures are stored in our depot, but also which banal everyday objects have written history,“ says museum director Prof Dr Hartwig Lüdtke
