An exciting time is beginning for the Initiative Lebensmitteldose (ILD): the initiative, which is backed by German food can manufacturers and their suppliers, is cooperating with EDEKA Handelsgesellschaft Rhein-Ruhr mbH and well-known food manufacturers.
They want to familiarise consumers with the advantages of cans as recyclable and sustainable food packaging. A special highlight: the campaign is also the starting signal for the widespread introduction of the logo „METAL recycles forever“ in the German market.
Can promotion at EDEKA
Together with its independent retailers, EDEKA Handelsgesellschaft Rhein-Ruhr mbH operates 720 full-range grocery stores in North Rhine-Westphalia and neighbouring regions under the EDEKA brand. Together with selected food manufacturers, the association is running a campaign in these stores from 7 to 12 October that focuses on the Recycling benefits of the food can is intended to draw attention to this. To coincide with the campaign, EDEKA is giving away 500 bicycles branded with the new „METAL recycles forever“ logo. The special thing about these bicycles is that, like the can, they are made of recyclable steel that can be reused again and again.
From can to bike? Recycling makes it possible
„Thinking in cycles is an important way to preserve our planet. With the food can, we can show how it works,“ explains Andreas Momm, spokesperson for the Food Can Initiative. This is because cans are made of packaging steel, which can be recycled as often as required and processed into new products.
Today's food can becomes tomorrow's bicycle, the ship's propeller of the day after tomorrow or a can again. „It's a cycle that is inspiring and widely used. 9 out of 10 cans are already recycled in Germany - no other packaging achieves more,“ emphasises Momm.
Putting the stamp on recycling: METAL recycles forever
The EDEKA Rhein-Ruhr campaign also supports the introduction of the „METAL recycles forever“ recycling logo on the German market. All food manufacturers participating in the can campaign in the stores will display this logo on their packaging and show that their choice of packaging enables a resource-conserving circular economy.
„We have been committed to the topic of packaging for years and emphasise its recyclability. With our campaign and support for the new logo, we are raising awareness of how cans save valuable resources through recycling,“ comments Torsten Gooden, Head of Purchasing EDEKA Rhein-Ruhr.
Who is authorised to use the logo?
Developed by the European metal packaging industry, the logo is available on request to all manufacturers of metal packaging and closures - as well as to their customers in the filled goods industry and the retail trade. Questions about the „METAL recycles forever“ logo in Germany should be addressed to the ILD member Metal Packaging Association (http://www.metallverpackungen.de).

About the food can initiative
In 2000, well-known German manufacturers from the food and packaging industry joined forces to form the Food Can Initiative. The aim is to provide consumers and nutrition experts with comprehensive information about food from cans. The initiative also explains the advantages of cans as particularly safe and sustainable packaging and shows how cans help to reduce food waste.
