Tiny Tony's environmentally friendly packaging
They found what they were looking for in a tried-and-tested partner: the packaging for the classic 180g chocolate bars at Tony's Chocolonely already uses a 100% made from recyclable, uncoated and certified paper from the Paper manufacturer Sappi for use. After various tests with a variety of paper samples in different grammages, the decision was made in favour of the Barrier paper Guard Nature MS from Sappi. The uncoated paper is characterised by its heat sealability, an integrated mineral oil barrier on the reverse side and good opening properties. It also scores with a natural paper look and can be recycled in the paper waste stream.
Kerstin Teichmann, Market Manager Packaging Solutions at Sappi Europe, remembers: „It was a real challenge to find the perfect packaging solution. paper-based substrate for the packaging of the Tiny Tony's to be found. For example, some bags tore open at the bottom during the test phase. Choosing the right material thickness was therefore essential. In the end, we were able to narrow down Sappi Guard Nature MS with a grammage of 80 g/m² as suitable.“

The bags developed for Tony's Chocolonely were first used in the USA for a Tiny Tony's Halloween collection. Since then, they have only been used for this specific market.
Thanks to its recyclability in the paper waste stream and certificates such as PEFC™ and FSC™, the packaging solution complements the chocolate manufacturer's sustainable concept. „Sappi Guard Nature MS is the perfect alternative for our bags. Its appearance and processing properties have completely won us over,“ says Julia Wienk.
