The DIY chain toom is now using an intralogistical reusable system for transporting plants. Instead of delivering plants from the main warehouse to the individual stores in disposable pallets, reusable trays are now being used.

From the producer via the toom plant warehouse in Bottrop to the stores and back again - until now, plants have travelled this route in disposable pallets. This creates unnecessary plastic waste, which the DIY chain will avoid in future. After a pilot phase in 2021, toom will be the first and only German DIY store to switch to reusable pallets. From April 2022, 60,000 pallets will initially be used in 230 stores.

As a result, the chain can not only save plastic, but also reduce its own CO2-balance: An independent study by the Fraunhofer Institute states that, in contrast to single-use systems, reusable systems can reduce CO2 can save. „The ongoing switch to reusable pallets brings us a big step closer to our goal of significantly reducing plastic waste in the garden sector too„, says Theo Keysers, Purchasing Director Plant.
