The best packaging in the world was honoured in Prague

A total of 219 prizes for successful packaging were awarded at the World Star Awards 2019. Mondi received eight prizes. SIG was also satisfied. One trend that emerged was that more and more sustainable packaging was honoured.

A total of 219 prizes for successful packaging were awarded at the World Star Awards 2019 of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). 97 award winners from 27 countries attended the awards ceremony in Prague at the end of May. Most of the awards, namely 26, went to Japanese companies. Mondi won the most awards for a single company.

Representatives from various branches of the globally active company were invited to the Mondi-Mondi's packaging experts were called on stage at the awards gala to receive one of the trophies. Mondi cardboard packaging was honoured in seven cases.

Mondi honoured for Glass7Box and BarrierPack Recyclable

For example, the „Glass7Box“ from Mondi Austria received an award in the „Household“ category. With the Packaging concept made of cardboard, which Mondi developed for the glass manufacturer Riedel, makes it possible to pack seven different types of glass with just one pack.

Mondi Germany, on the other hand, was the first company to BarrierPack Recyclable in the „Packaging Materials and Components“ category. The easy-to-open packaging bag consists of two Barrier films from Polyethylene and offers significant recycling advantages over conventional mixed material solutions made of PET/PE.

SIG Signature Pack successful in the packaging category

There were a particularly large number of awards in the latter category. SIG was also successful there with its „Signature Pack“, the world's first aseptic carton pack with 100 per cent plant-based renewable raw materials, according to SIG. The special feature of the packaging is that not only 70 to 80 per cent of the Cardboard packaging renewable raw material wood, but also the polymers with which the raw cardboard is laminated are made from a renewable raw material. Mass balance system are connected to plant-based materials. The same applies to the material from which the closures are made.

Sustainable packaging received many prizes

Sustainable packaging were highly prized by the award jury anyway. For example, the Finnish supplier Sulapac also received a World Star Award. Sulapac is already 100 years old and has made a name for itself as a manufacturer of sustainable jewellery packaging. This consists of FSC-certified wood fibres and natural binders. The packaging is completely biodegradable. Sulapac's raw material can be processed on conventional extrusion and thermoforming machines. For the jury, Sulapac shows that luxury items and sustainable packaging are not mutually exclusive.

In the food packaging category, the organic olive oil packaging from „Finca Telena“ from Spain received an award. We already reported in February about the completely recyclable olive oil bottles made from polyester resin, which won a Liderpack Award at the Spanish Hispack trade fair.

Portion packs for cat milk won gold

Various gold awards were presented during the ceremony in Prague. In the field of marketing, this award went to Constantia Flexibles from Austria for trendy Portion packs made of aluminium for cat milk. The Finnish manufacturer Jospak Oy Tray received the sustainability gold award. The prize was awarded to an Tray packaging for food made from paper and plastic, which reduces plastic consumption by 85 per cent. Smileysys from Italy also received a gold award for packaging that uses 30 per cent less plastic than usual.

International prize for national winners

The World Star Award is presented every year by the World Packaging Organisation (WPO). The current winners were announced at the end of last year. The award ceremony always takes place at the same time as the first WPO representatives' meeting.

Products that have already received a national packaging award recognised by the WPO can apply for the World Star Awards. For Germany, for example, this is the German Packaging Award.
