The WorldStar competition is one of the most important events of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and the most important international award in the field of packaging. 345 entries from 35 countries around the world were received for the 2021 awards. Here we present the announcements of the proud winners - in chronological order. 

Henkel and Greiner Packaging: cardboard-plastic packaging

Brand manufacturer Henkel and Greiner Packaging received the award for the K3-r-PP packaging for Persil 4in1 DISCS detergent.

The sustainable cardboard-plastic packaging that Handle for its Persil 4in1 DISCS have been consistently optimised in recent years: These now have a post-consumer r-PP content of 50 %. 

With the cardboard-plastic packaging Greiner Packaging helps to reduce plastic consumption and also offers a high-quality solution - both visually and in terms of stability. The sustainable Persil packaging is a prime example of circular thinking - with now 50 % of recycled polypropylene (r-PP), which is obtained from household plastic waste. Thanks to the innovative, patented tear-open system, the cardboard wrap and plastic container can be easily separated and recycled after use.

Cardbox Packaging - The alternative to the conventional ice-cream tub

In collaboration with designers from Valuepap, Cardbox Packaging has developed an alternative to plastic-laminated ice-cream tubs. These have been common in the food packaging industry to date. 

These Premium ice-cream cup packaging is made of bio-coated cardboard with a soft-touch surface. It impresses with its design and is compostable in accordance with EN 13432 thanks to the bio-coated materials used.

The Cuckoo Ice Cream Cup was honoured with the WorldStar Award in the Food category.

Hoffmann Neopac - Two sustainability-orientated tube solutions

The RECYCLED PLASTIC TUBE from Neopac, which Farfalla used for several of its 100 % natural vegan hair care products, was one of the award-winning solutions. The RECYCLED PLASTIC TUBES are part of the EcoDesign family of Neopac with sustainable solutions and are suitable for use with cosmetic products. They consist of up to 64 % of PCR (Post-Consumer Recycled Material) material, which is obtained from household waste such as milk, water and juice bottles, as well as PIR (Post-Industrial Recycled Material) material, which is created during the production of laminate.

The tube solution from Neopac for the cosmetics company was also honoured with a WorldStar Award Manna. The co-extruded tube consists of 64 % recycled household waste (post-consumer materials). The tube has been certified by Cosmos and the Ecocert testing organisation for sustainable products and can be processed in the same recycling streams as classic polyethylene (PE) tubes.

Karl Knauer - Luxurious jungle packaging

For the second time in a row, the packaging specialist Karl Knauer was honoured with the prestigious WorldStar Award. The international jury of experts selected the packaging for the ASAHEGO face cream from the luxury natural cosmetics brand "The Creammaker" as the winner in the "Luxury" category from 345 entries from 35 countries.

The emotional product presentation was created by Antje Urbe (The Creammaker) and Joachim Maatz (Maatz Design). In their statement, the packaging experts recognised the "unusually successful combination of aesthetics, functionality and originality" of the packaging. At the same time, the ingenious design and the 100 % recyclable material of the packaging, which fulfils all sustainability requirements, were highlighted.

Teufelberger - Sustainable strapping

TEWE® SoPRIM strapping is an impressive result of a holistic, consistently applied sustainability concept at TEUFELBERGER.

The idea was to create a lighter strapping band that requires less raw material and still delivers the same performance. It should also be recyclable to 100% through simple material separation. During development, TEUFELBERGER also focussed on the packaging of TEWE® SoPRIM® and achieved a simplification in the daily handling of strapping.

Practical handles are attached to the packaging and the innovative design significantly reduces the strain when lifting the reel out of the packaging.

buhl paperform - Protective transport pads for buckets

BucPac can be used to transport buckets with solid, liquid and viscous contents in single parcel shipments without breakage. BucPac is ideal for online trading of individual buckets. The three-dimensional design prevents the bucket from bursting or the lid from opening unintentionally during transport.

BucPac is made from 100% waste paper pulp and can be fully recycled after use via the waste paper recycling system. BucPac also has a positive effect on transport and storage volumes. This makes BucPac particularly sustainable. BucPac has already been recognised as the winner of the DVI's German Packaging Award 2020.

Duo Plast - Sustainable stretch film

With the award-winning DUO SHAPE EARTH 4 film, it has been possible for the first time to incorporate at least 25 % post-consumer regenerate (PCR) into the stretch films without any significant loss of film performance.

This is the new benchmark for the use of recycled materials in stretch film and also fulfils the requirements for optimum load securing.

Stora Enso: Sustainable pellet packaging

The award-winning 12 kg pellet box from the Finnish paper and packaging manufacturer Stora Enso represents a sustainable alternative to the usual plastic packaging for wood pellets.

When designing the packaging, special attention was paid to the User friendliness and the Recyclability as well as the visual appearance. An integrated carrying handle facilitates transport.
