The WorldStar competition is one of the most important events of the World Packaging Organisation (WPO) and the most important international award in the field of packaging. 440 entries from 37 countries around the world were received for the 2022 awards. Here we present the announcements of the proud winners - in chronological order.
The official award ceremony will take place in May 2022 at Ipack Ima in Milan.
Cardbox Packaging receives WorldStar Award for cardboard spoon
Simple but ingenious: the Viennese company Cardbox Packaging received an award for the foldable Karlo spoon, which is a response to the EU ban on disposable plastic cutlery.
Thanks to its water-based coating, Karlo is environmentally friendly and therefore a sustainable packaging solution, especially for dairy products and ready meals on the go. The spoon can be easily folded, attached to the product or even inserted into the lid
Five awards for DS Smith
The British packaging company DS Smith has won five WorldStar Awards. Among other things, an e-commerce packaging that can be converted into a dog basket was honoured.
As a goodie for its online customers and their four-legged friends, Bubeck Petfood delivered its wide range of dog food and accessories for a short time in special shipping packaging from DS Smith. The bottom part of the packaging can be converted into a hexagonal dog basket made of corrugated cardboard in just a few simple steps using the DIY method and can therefore be reused. Dog owners posted the results of the upcycling campaign on social media, which not only led to positive emotions among customers in connection with the brand, but also further boosted sales. Further information on the award-winning products from DS Smith can be found here.
Greiner wins award for rPET milk packaging
The Austrian plastics processor Greiner is delighted to have received a WorldStar Award. The company received the award for a holistic system for supplying schools with milk - with closed-loop production.
Austria's school milk farmers supply schools and kindergartens directly with their milk products in rPET cups - the children consume the milk products during their break, after use the cups are collected again and then returned to the school milk farmers for recycling. The collected cups are collected from the farm, washed and shredded. The shredded material, known as flakes, is cleaned and processed. New r-PET cups are thermoformed from the extruded film at Greiner Packaging - as happened for the first time before Christmas - which can then be refilled by the farmers and delivered to schools and nurseries.
Mono-material packaging from Hatzopoulos wins Worldstar Award 2022
The Greek packaging company A. Hatzopoulos S.A. was honoured with a WorldStar Award for a mono-material packaging solution for olives. The packaging was developed for the olive producer Gaea.
In order to fulfil the requirements for barrier properties, aesthetics and efficiency, the previous generation of olive packaging film relied on a multi-material combination. However, this mixed structure cannot be recycled using mechanical recycling technologies. The solution was provided by Hatzopoulos based on the X-CYCLE packaging technology. The new PP mono-material film developed enabled a smooth transition from a conventional film formula to a recyclable film with a better environmental profile, reducing the weight by 20 per cent.
Fischbach KG and Tailorlux GmbH: Award for NIR cartridge
After the NIR marker for recyclable silicone cartridges has already been honoured with the German Packaging Award, the solution has now also received international recognition with the World Star Award from the World Packaging Organisation.
Together with Fischbach KG, Tailorlux GmbH has developed a coating for sorting silicone cartridges with standard sensors in the sorting process. The cameras used in the sorting plants can only differentiate between material classes in the plastic. For example, a cartridge made of HDPE is always a fraction for the sensor technology.
The marking consists of a print made from UV screen printing inks. It is barely recognisable to the eye The wafer-thin, imperceptible application of Tailorlux markers manipulates this recognition so that additional information (here: containing silicone) can be added to the HDPE class in the recognition.
A WorldStar Packaging Award for Werner & Mertz for the third time
This is the third world innovation from Werner & Mertz to be honoured with the WorldStar Packaging Award: This time for increasing the proportion of Yellow Bag material from 20 per cent to 50 per cent in the eco-pioneer's PET bottles made entirely of used plastic - a joint achievement with cooperation partner ALPLA.
Back in 2018, the Mainz-based cleaning products company and ALPLA received the prestigious award for HDPE bottles made from 100 per cent recycled material from the Yellow Bag. This was followed two years later by the award for the first high-quality recyclable stand-up pouch in cooperation with partner Mondi. Werner & Mertz has now proven the real feasibility of literally excellent implementation for three types of plastic - rHDPE, flexible LDPE films and rPET from the Yellow Bag source.
Gissler & Pass: Household award for dalli washing powder packaging
The announcement of the winners of the WorldStar 2022, the most prestigious global packaging award, gives Gissler & Pass another reason to celebrate just before the end of the year.
The sustainable packaging concept for the dalli group won over the jury by replacing the plastic carrying handle and the plastic tear strip with corrugated cardboard solutions. The packaging is therefore 96 per cent plastic-free. In addition, the elimination of all non-paper materials also improves the logistical processes and makes handling easier for consumers.
Despite significant design changes, the new packaging runs smoothly, both on the Gissler & Pass processing machines and on the dalli group lines, without the need for additional investment in new machine parts.
Mondi wins nine WorldStar Packaging Awards
The global packaging and paper manufacturer Mondi received nine awards in six categories at this year's WorldStar Packaging Awards.
„Mondi is a pioneer when it comes to making packaging sustainable by design. Our EcoSolutions approach means that we always evaluate the best solutions for our customers, our planet and the end consumer by using paper where possible and plastic when it makes sense,“ says Thomas Ott, CEO-designate of Mondi Flexible Packaging and Engineered Materials.
Mondi received the WorldStar Packaging Awards for products in the categories eCommerce, Point of Sale, Packaging Materials and Components, Food, Fresh Fruits and Vegetables as well as the special award for Sustainability and Category Transit. The latter was awarded to the (Un)-Lock System from Mondi Corrugated Solutions.
WorldStar for Panther: brand awareness successfully increased
As the German Packaging Institute already did this summer as part of the German Packaging Award, the WPO (World Packaging Organisation) has now also awarded a WorldStar in the „Point of Sale“ category to the extraordinary display for the Nuremberg-based company Staedtler.
The secondary placement element created at Panther Display with its detailed colour and design language „...fits perfectly into the marketing strategy and helps to increase brand awareness“, was the verdict of the international jury, recognising the visual implementation of Staedtler's creativity strategy by the display experts.
The Staedtler back-to-school campaign for 2021 was dedicated to the theme of „Nature“. The secondary placement of Panther Display focuses on the highly successful and popular coloured pencils of the Noris Colour brand.
As an important part of Staedtler's supply chain, Panther Display also handles the packaging of secondary placements. In close coordination with the customer, the required quantities are prepared and made available on demand.
