INEOS Styrolution launches the first food contact grade yoghurt pot made from recycled polystyrene. This innovation fulfils the requirements of the EU PPWR Directive and sets new standards in the packaging industry.
The world's first introduction of a Yoghurt pots made from mechanically recycled polystyrene in food contact quality marks a significant step towards a circular economy. INEOS Styrolution has made this innovation possible together with partners along the value chain. The new technology has already been successfully tested and fulfils the requirements of the EU Directive on packaging and packaging waste (PPWR).
The recycling process involves several steps, including Precise sorting, hot washing and melt filtration. The „super clean process“ developed by INEOS Styrolution achieves a high quality that was previously only known from PET recyclates. The recycled material has the same physical properties as conventional polystyrene, which means that it can be used in a wide range of applications. Seamless integration into existing production processes made possible.
The technology was presented by industry representatives at the Dresden Packaging Days 2024, where the ecological footprint and the quality of the recycled material were emphasised. Consumer acceptance tests also showed a positive response on the recycled cups that will soon be available in Lidl supermarkets.
