Young German packaging designers have a particularly good chance of having their creations honoured this year. For the first time, the European „Pro Carton Young Designers Award“ competition is also being organised for Germany.

The announcement of the additional German Design Award is made possible by the cooperation of the European Association of the Cartonboard Industry with the German Folding Carton Industry Association (FFI). German participants therefore have a double chance of winning. They automatically take part in the German and European „Young Designers Award“. Two juries will also decide on the awards.

Entries can be submitted in four categories until mid-May 2018. There are two categories for „Creative Cartonboard Packaging“ - one for food packaging made of cartonboard, the other for non-food packaging. The third category is called „Creative Cartonboard Ideas“. Here, participants are called upon to be creative in their use of cardboard beyond packaging. Finally, the „Save the planet“ category is all about packaging that conserves materials and resources as much as possible.

On the subject of „Resource-saving packaging“, which has been organised for more than 15 years Pro-Carton-competition and the „Better with less - Design Challenge“ organised by the Finnish carton manufacturer Metsä Board, which started last autumn and ended at the end of March. Pro Carton regularly co-operates with the competitions of its partners and members, explains Pro Carton Marketing Advisor Suzanne Mc Ewen when asked by „packaging journal“. The student entries from the partner competitions, such as that of Metsä Board, also take part in the „Young Designers Award“. This „award co-operation“ offers young packaging designers the opportunity to attract even more public attention with their own designs.

Growing interest in the young talent competitions

In general, Pro Carton is pleased that the competition is becoming increasingly popular. According to McEwen, more than 40 design schools and universities took part last year. Pro Carton supports the participants by providing publications and, above all, cartonboard materials for the design work. Workshops are also organised together with experts from member companies.

The main prizes of the European „Young Designers Award“ are a visit to Metsä Board in Finland and practical training at the folding carton manufacturer Mayr-Melnhof Packaging in Austria. All finalists and their teachers can look forward to a trip to the European award ceremony in Riga on 20 September 2018. The German award ceremony will then take place at the „FachPack“ trade fair from 25 to 27 September 2018 at the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg. The prize there is a week's work experience at a folding carton manufacturer or carton producer.
