Mauser Packaging Solutions is strengthening its circular economy activities in Spain with the opening of a new reconditioning and recycling plant at the BASF site in Tarragona. The IBCs and post-consumer plastics recycled on site improve both efficiency and the sustainability balance.

Mauser Packaging Solutions, a global provider of packaging solutions across the entire product life cycle, has opened a new reconditioning and recycling plant at BASF's site in Tarragona (Spain). The new building emphasises the company's commitment to sustainability and its strategic cooperation with BASF. At the same time, the project represents an expansion of production capacity for reconditioned industrial packaging and high-quality recycled material.

Efficient utilisation of synergies on site

In the new plant, intermediate bulk containers (IBCs) are cleaned, processed and fed back into the packaging cycle. In addition, used plastic packaging is turned into high-quality post-consumer recyclates (PCR), which serve as a raw material for new products. The operation within the BASF site makes it possible to significantly shorten transport and logistics processes, thereby reducing CO₂ emissions and optimising operational processes.

The direct partnership with BASF enables faster market launches and improved recycling of used packaging.

Certified for dangerous goods

The new facility fulfils strict safety requirements: It has BAM certificates 11027 (reconditioning) and 14817 (cross-bottling) from the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM). This means that production is also suitable for applications involving hazardous materials.

In addition to BASF, other regional customers could also benefit from the recycled IBCs. Production is carried out using modern technologies for water treatment and green energy concepts - a further step towards the ecological optimisation of industrial packaging solutions, according to the statement.
