Coveris has acquired the German company GEFO Folienbetrieb. GEFO, based in Gera, produces cast polypropylene (CPP) films. With this strategic investment, Coveris aims to strengthen its position in the high-quality CPP applications sector and expand its capacity for sustainable packaging solutions.
Following extensive investment in modern extrusion technologies for speciality films within its European production network, Coveris is now expanding its CPP extrusion capacities to meet the growing demand for recyclable mono-material packaging. The acquisition strengthens the portfolio of sustainable packaging solutions and supports the company's „No Waste“ vision, by which Coveris assists customers in meeting future regulatory requirements – particularly the European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR).
Rising customer demand
CPP films are gaining increasing importance in the flexible packaging market. This is due to their excellent recyclability and their suitability for modern mono-material solutions. Up until now, Coveris Kufstein was the only CPP extrusion site within the corporate group and was already operating at full capacity to meet the rising customer demand.
By integrating GEFO, Coveris is not only expanding its production capacities but also its offering in attractive growth segments. These include, in particular, sterilizable packaging, lidding films, bags for bread and baked goods, medical packaging, and other non-food applications.
What drives growth?
The European CPP market is forecast to grow by around three percent annually. For demanding applications such as sterilizable packaging, medical films, and lidding films, growth of over four percent is even expected. Key drivers are increasing sustainability requirements and the growing substitution of hard-to-recycle packaging materials.
„GEFO ideally complements our existing network and supports our sustainability strategy,“ explains Christian Kolarik, CEO of Coveris. „The demand for recyclable mono-material packaging is growing continuously across Europe. Expanding our CPP capacity for high-quality applications is therefore a logical next step. With the acquisition, we are strengthening our production base and creating the conditions to continue offering our customers innovative and sustainable packaging solutions that meet the requirements of the market and legislation.“
