With kp Elite Nova, Klöckner Pentaplast has introduced a new MAP shell which, according to the company, is around 10 per cent lighter than comparable solutions - with the same performance and complete recyclability, as it says.

Klöckner Pentaplast (kp), a global provider of packaging solutions, is launching kp Elite Nova, a new generation of modified atmosphere trays (MAP). According to the manufacturer, this is the lightest tray in its category. The product has been specially developed for use in automated packaging lines for proteins and is designed to combine sustainability with high functionality.

Technical development and sustainability requirements

A new type of ribbed structure reinforces the material specifically where stability is required. At the same time, the amount of material used can be reduced, which, according to Klöckner Pentaplast, makes the shell around ten per cent lighter than other MAP shells - without compromising on barrier effect, sealing or mechanical strength. The solution was developed using finite element analysis.

„We are proud to present kp Elite Nova, a true innovation that reflects over 60 years of packaging expertise,“ said Paul Rawlings, Launch Manager at kp Food Packaging. According to Rawlings, producers will no longer have to choose between sustainability and performance.

Focus on recyclability and the circular economy

The new tray is made from up to 100% recycled PET, including from kp's Tray2Tray programme, which enables a closed recycling loop for food trays. According to the company, the design is compliant with the European Design for Recycling guidelines (D4R) and has been confirmed as recyclable by the Tray Circularity Evaluation Platform (TCEP).
