The Italian closure manufacturer Guala Closures has opened a new production plant in Gartcosh, Scotland. With an investment of over 60 million euros, the project is one of the largest Italian direct investments in the UK.
With the official opening of its new site in Gartcosh near Glasgow, Guala Closures is emphasising its long-term strategy to strengthen the UK market, particularly in the high-quality spirits sector. The state-of-the-art production facility covers around 20,000 square metres and is expected to create over 300 skilled jobs. The company is thus making a significant contribution to local economic development.
The geographical proximity to over 100 distilleries already supplied enables even closer integration with the Scotch whisky industry, which reached a total value of almost 7.9 billion euros in 2024. Exports alone accounted for around 6.2 billion euros. A funding contribution of over 3.5 million euros from Scottish Enterprise also underlines the strategic importance of the project.
Guala Closures CEO Andrea Lodetti explains: „With this investment, we are strengthening our roots in a globally iconic region and setting new standards in sustainable, high-performance packaging.“ The system is designed for efficiency and scalability and is intended to offer added value to both customers and the company itself.
Focus on technology and sustainability
The plant relies on innovative technologies such as Electro Magnetic Forming (EMF), which were developed and patented by Guala Closures. Production is complemented by robot-assisted systems and flexible automation solutions, which enable tamper-proof seals and efficient filling processes, among other things.
Sustainability played a central role right from the start. 2.4 MW solar panels are installed on the roof of the building, supplemented by energy-efficient LED lighting, motion detectors and optimised thermal insulation. A sustainable drainage system (SUDS) with retention basins ensures environmentally friendly water management.
Innovation centre with R&D focus
In addition to production, the site is also home to a specialised research and development centre for high-quality closure solutions. The British team has special expertise in working with recycled and special plastics and develops customised product solutions together with premium brands. This supports customers in an increasingly design- and quality-driven market environment.
With 37 production sites and seven R&D centres worldwide, the new plant in Gartcosh strengthens Guala Closures' global presence. The Group achieved a turnover of over 830 million euros in 2024 and employs over 5,000 people.
