Origin Materials has announced a strategic customer relationship with Berlin Packaging. The aim is to introduce and distribute sustainable PET-1881 closures for beverage packaging worldwide.
Origin Materials, a US-based sustainable materials technology company, is partnering with Berlin Packaging to bring PET-1881 bottle closures to market. Berlin Packaging will distribute the closures developed by Origin to a broad customer network, including leading beverage producers, according to a statement. The 1881 closures are considered a technological innovation that enables lighter packaging, longer shelf life and improved recyclability through the use of „mono-material“ containers. They can be made from 100 per cent recycled PET and used for food applications. Unlike conventional PP or HDPE closures, they are thermoformed instead of injection moulded.
Origin CEO John Bissell described the collaboration as an important milestone that significantly expands market access and lays the foundation for further product formats. Berlin Packaging also sees the partnership as a contribution to its own sustainability strategy, which is based on innovation, cooperation and measurable results. The global market for closures and caps is estimated to be worth around 65 billion US dollars.
Technological and strategic importance
With the PET-1881 closures, Origin Materials aims to increase the recyclability of beverage packaging, as the bottle and closure can be made from the same material. For Berlin Packaging, which has over 1,700 suppliers and more than 100 locations worldwide, the new product line complements the existing portfolio of sustainable packaging solutions.
