Techlan and Gluecom present Re-Liner, a sustainable solution for e-commerce packaging. Recycled silicone release liners are designed to reduce waste and improve production processes at the same time.

The growing demand in online retail is putting the packaging industry under increasing pressure to be sustainable. A key problem is the release paper used in peel-and-seal packaging: It protects the adhesive surfaces during production, but ends up as waste after a single use. Millions of square metres of these so-called release liners are disposed of every year and cause a high carbon footprint, the report continues.

The British company Techlan has developed a recycling solution for this with Re-Liner. Using a patented process, used silicone paper from the aviation, automotive and composite industries is collected, cleaned and processed into new liner webs. According to Techlan, this enables CO₂ savings of around 67 per cent compared to primary material. The technology requires no water or chemicals and uses only renewable energy.

Cooperation with Gluecom for adhesives

Matching recycled release papers with suitable adhesives is crucial to ensure that they function reliably in practice. This is where Gluecom comes into play: the company supplies hotmelt adhesives that are specially matched to the cleaned surfaces. In addition to consistent quality and rapid availability, the products are also designed to reduce material usage.

First applications in e-commerce

One of the first users is the British Cardboard Box Company. It reports stable production processes, shorter delivery times and a significant reduction in its own carbon footprint. According to Operations Director Nick Lee, the solution has been seamlessly integrated into existing production processes and makes it possible to offer customers sustainable packaging without compromising on quality.

Significance for the market

E-commerce is considered the biggest growth market for this solution. The combination of increasing volumes, regulatory pressure and the need for flexible supply chains makes the industry particularly suitable for the use of re-liners. According to the companies, manufacturers could not only save costs, but also measurably advance their ESG goals.
